🚨 1991 Chrysler LeBaron: Emergency Neutral
The 1991 LeBaron coupe uses a column-mounted shift lever with a mechanical shift interlock button on the lever itself.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Press the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shift interlock button on the side of the column lever and move to Neutral
- If the interlock button will not release, locate the shift lock override slot on the lower column shroud near the base of the shifter
- Remove the small plastic cover on the column shroud (may require a small flat-blade screwdriver)
- Insert a small screwdriver or key into the override slot and press while moving the shifter to Neutral
- If completely dead, you may need to manually rotate the shifter without the override—apply firm pressure on the button while pulling the lever toward Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Lower steering column shroud near the base of the shift lever, typically on the right side; covered by a small removable cap
With zero electrical power
With zero power, the mechanical interlock button on the column lever may still function—try pressing it firmly while moving the shifter. The override slot bypasses the electrical portion but the mechanical linkage should still work. If column is locked, turn the key while gently moving the steering wheel.
