🚨 1995 Chrysler LeBaron: Emergency Neutral

The 1995 Chrysler LeBaron coupe uses a traditional column-mounted automatic transmission shifter with a mechanical shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if the battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Firmly depress the brake pedal.
  4. Locate the shift lock override—a small plastic cap or slot on the lower right side of the steering column shroud, near where the shifter meets the column.
  5. Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the cap if present.
  6. Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down or push in while simultaneously moving the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  7. If the vehicle has zero electrical power, the mechanical override should still function—continue applying pressure to the override release while shifting.
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or towed.

With zero electrical power
The mechanical shift lock override does not require electrical power. Ensure you are applying firm, steady pressure to the override button while moving the shifter. The ignition key does not need to be in any particular position for the override to work.
