The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (some electrical power helps but is not strictly required).
- Firmly depress the brake pedal.
- Locate the shift lock override access—a small rectangular or round plastic cap on the lower right side of the steering column shroud, adjacent to the shifter lever.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the cap.
- Insert the screwdriver into the exposed override slot and press firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter lever down from Park to Neutral.
- If the battery is completely dead, the mechanical override will still release the shifter lock—continue applying pressure to the override while moving the shifter.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or loaded onto a flatbed.
