⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small covered slot near the shifter base on the console
- The override is typically forward and to the left of the shifter base, covered by a small rubber plug or trim piece
- Remove the cover by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no brake function, continue holding override down and shift directly to Neutral
- Maintain pressure on override until shifter is fully in Neutral position

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical override functions without electrical power. Remove the cover, insert tool into the override slot, press down firmly, and move the shifter to Neutral. No ignition power is required for the mechanical bypass to work.
