🚨 2009 Chrysler Sebring: Emergency Neutral

The 2009 Sebring sedan uses a console-mounted PRNDL shifter with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override access near the shifter base on the console
  4. The override is typically forward and to the left of the shifter base, covered by a small rubber plug or trim cap
  5. Remove the cover by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or pulling the rubber plug
  6. Insert a screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  7. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
  8. If no brake function, continue holding override and shift directly to Neutral
  9. Keep override depressed until shifter is fully engaged in Neutral position

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical override operates without electrical power. Remove the access cover, insert tool into the override slot, apply firm downward pressure, and move the shifter to Neutral. No battery power or ignition position is required for mechanical override function.
