🚨 1992 Chrysler Town & Country: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 Town & Country uses a traditional column-mounted automatic shifter with a mechanical shift-lock system tied to the brake pedal.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular slot on the right side of the steering column shroud, directly below and to the right of the shifter lever base
  4. Remove the small plastic cover plug from the override slot if present
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot
  6. Press the screwdriver downward firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and moving it down toward Drive/Neutral
  7. Move the shifter to Neutral position
  8. Keep foot on brake while starting if attempting to start the vehicle; otherwise vehicle is ready to roll/tow

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock on these AS minivans is mechanical and brake-pedal-dependent. The override slot remains functional without power.
