The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular slot on the right side of the steering column shroud, directly below and to the right of the shifter lever base
- Remove the small plastic cover plug from the override slot if present
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot
- Press the screwdriver downward firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and moving it down toward Drive/Neutral
- Move the shifter to Neutral position
- Keep foot on brake while starting if attempting to start the vehicle; otherwise vehicle is ready to roll/tow
