The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and chock all wheels securely—this is a PHEV with high-voltage components
- Attempt to power on the vehicle: press the brake pedal and push the start button (even with dead 12V battery, some hybrids retain minimal function)
- If the 12V system has any power, apply the electronic parking brake emergency release by pulling and holding the EPB switch UP for 5-10 seconds with ignition off
- Locate the shift lock override: look for a small rectangular access cover on the console to the left of the shifter base, near the P gate
- Remove the override cover carefully with a flat tool or your fingernail
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver into the override slot and press down while simultaneously moving the shifter from P to N
- If completely dead with no electrical response, you must provide temporary 12V power via jump-start to energize the shift interlock momentarily
- Once in N, ensure the high-voltage system is OFF (vehicle display should show no HV system active warnings)
- Vehicle should be loaded onto flatbed with ALL WHEELS OFF THE GROUND—do not tow with any wheels on pavement due to hybrid drivetrain
