🚨 2026 Citroën C5 X: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 Citroën C5 X hybrid uses an electronic monostable gear selector mounted on the center console that returns to center position after each input.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position if any 12V power is available (do not start engine)
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Locate the shift lock override - a small rectangular cover on the left side of the gear selector base
  5. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover
  6. Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
  7. While holding the override down, press the unlock button on the gear selector and move it to the N position
  8. If successful, the dashboard will show 'N' and the vehicle is now in neutral
  9. Release the override and replace the cover

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shift lock cannot be overridden through normal means. The hybrid system requires 12V power for the transmission control module. You may need to jump-start the 12V battery (located in engine bay or trunk) to provide minimal power to release the shifter. If this is not possible, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with wheels free or using dollies - DO NOT tow with drive wheels on the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID WARNING: Before loading onto flatbed, consult owner's manual for tow mode activation if available. The C5 X hybrid has both electric motors and conventional transmission components. Never tow with any wheels on the ground - flatbed transport only. The high-voltage battery system is separate from the 12V system; even with HV battery charged, a dead 12V battery prevents shifter operation.
