The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot - typically a small rectangular cap near the shifter base on the console
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If the 12V battery is completely dead and ignition cannot be activated, continue pressing the override while attempting to move the shifter - some resistance is normal
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override must be used. The override mechanism is mechanical and does not require electrical power, but the shifter may be stiffer to move. You may need to rock the vehicle slightly to relieve transmission pressure while using the override.
