⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override - look for a small cap or slot near the shifter base, typically on the right side or front of the shifter assembly
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the override cap if present
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If the 12V battery is completely dead, continue pressing the override while attempting to move the shifter - some resistance is normal
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded
Shift-lock override location
Small cap or slot near the shifter base on the center console, generally on the right or front side of the shifter - check around the perimeter of the shifter boot
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the mechanical shift lock override must be used. The override does not require electrical power to function. The shifter may require more force to move than normal. If the steering is locked, you may need to slightly turn the steering wheel while turning the key to unlock it before attempting to shift.
