⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, typically covered by a small rectangular cap or cover.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the key blade to pry off the override cover cap.
- Insert a flat-blade screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the button on the shifter handle and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If working with a completely dead battery, you may need to apply additional force to the shifter button while pressing the override.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical override should still function. Press firmly on the override while manipulating the shifter button and lever. The brake pedal position does not affect the mechanical override.
