🚨 2004 Daewoo Matiz: Emergency Neutral

The 2004 Daewoo Matiz features a compact floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override access—look for a small cover on the console near the shifter base
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver, key, or coin to carefully remove the override cover cap
  5. Insert a small screwdriver or pen into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter release button and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If the ignition key won't turn, rock the steering wheel back and forth while attempting to turn the key to ACC
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot on the center console near the shifter base, typically on the left side or forward of the shifter
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override provides mechanical release. Access the override slot as described and press down to release the shifter mechanism. The steering column lock may be engaged; rock the steering wheel while turning the key. If steering lock cannot be released, the vehicle must be winched or dollied onto a flatbed while still in Park.
