🚨 1999 Daewoo Nubira: Emergency Neutral

The 1999 Daewoo Nubira uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with a button-release mechanism and electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if the battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Locate the shift lock override access: look for a small rectangular cap or cover near the base of the shifter on the console, typically on the left side or front of the shifter boot.
  4. Remove the override cap by prying it up gently with a flathead screwdriver to expose the override slot.
  5. Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot and push down firmly to release the shift lock mechanism.
  6. While holding the override tool down, press the shifter release button and move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. Release the override tool and verify the transmission is in Neutral before moving the vehicle.
Shift-lock override location
Small cap near the base of the shifter on the console, generally on the left side or forward of the shifter boot; the override slot is beneath this cap.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead electrical power, the mechanical shift lock override will still function. You do not need any power to the ignition system—simply access the override slot, depress the release mechanism with a tool, and shift to Neutral.
