🚨 1997 Dodge Caravan: Emergency Neutral

The 1997 Caravan uses a column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift-lock override release.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available (this may allow the shift lock to release normally with brake pedal pressed).
  3. If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the steering column shroud, just below and to the left of the shifter lever.
  4. Remove the small rubber or plastic cap covering the override slot if present.
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and push firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you to move it out of Park.
  6. Move the shifter to Neutral, then remove the key and verify the vehicle is secure before towing or moving.
Shift-lock override location
Left side of the steering column shroud, just below and to the left of the shifter lever; typically covered by a small cap.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical override slot still functions. Insert a tool into the override slot while moving the shifter; no battery power is required for this mechanical release. The ignition key position does not matter when using the override.
