⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available (this may allow the shift lock to release normally with brake pedal pressed).
- If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the steering column shroud, just below and to the left of the shifter lever.
- Remove the small rubber or plastic cap covering the override slot if present.
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and push firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you to move it out of Park.
- Move the shifter to Neutral, then remove the key and verify the vehicle is secure before towing or moving.
