🚨 1997 Dodge Dakota: Emergency Neutral

The 1997 Dakota uses a column-mounted automatic shifter with a mechanical shift interlock button on the lever that requires brake pedal depression.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible to provide power to the shift interlock solenoid
  3. If you have power: Press the brake pedal firmly and press the shifter button while pulling the lever toward you and down into Neutral
  4. If no power or the interlock is failed: Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small plastic cap or slot near the base of the steering column shroud where the shifter lever enters
  5. Remove the cap (may require a small flathead screwdriver to pry gently)
  6. Insert a small screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the override slot and press down/inward to mechanically release the shifter lock
  7. While holding the override depressed, press the shifter button and move the lever down to Neutral
  8. Remove the tool and verify the vehicle is in Neutral before attempting to move it
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the column shroud where the shifter lever enters the steering column; typically requires removing a small plastic access cap on the lower or side portion of the shroud
With zero electrical power
With no battery power, the shift interlock solenoid remains locked. You must use the mechanical shift lock override. If the override is inaccessible or broken, the steering column shroud can be removed (typically two screws under the column) to access the shift interlock mechanism directly - look for a white or tan plastic solenoid with a plunger that can be manually pushed aside.
