🚨 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan: Emergency Neutral

The 2008 Grand Caravan uses a traditional console-mounted PRNDL shifter lever with electronic shift interlock, identical to 2007.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable plastic cap on the left side of the shifter base, near where the shifter meets the console
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to gently pry off the plastic cap covering the override slot
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or small tool into the override slot and press firmly downward
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If no brake pedal pressure is available, continue holding the override down while moving the shifter directly to Neutral
  8. Once in Neutral, you can release the override tool and the vehicle can be rolled or steered
  9. Replace the cap after completing the procedure

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the override slot still functions mechanically. You will not need to press the brake pedal - simply remove the cap, press the override down with a tool, and shift to Neutral. The steering wheel will remain locked, so the vehicle must be towed with front wheels off the ground or on a flatbed.
