⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable plastic cap on the left side of the shifter base, near where the shifter meets the console
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to gently pry off the plastic cap covering the override slot
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or small tool into the override slot and press firmly downward
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no brake pedal pressure is available, continue holding the override down while moving the shifter directly to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, you can release the override tool and the vehicle can be rolled or steered
- Replace the cap after completing the procedure

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the override slot still functions mechanically. You will not need to press the brake pedal - simply remove the cap, press the override down with a tool, and shift to Neutral. The steering wheel will remain locked, so the vehicle must be towed with front wheels off the ground or on a flatbed.
