⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available
- Locate the shift lock override - it is a small slot or button typically found on the left side of the shifter base, covered by a small removable cap
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to remove the cap covering the override access
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override mechanism down, press the brake pedal if power is available and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no power is available, continue holding the override down and move the shifter directly to Neutral - brake pedal pressure is not required
- Once in Neutral, release the override tool and the vehicle can be moved
- Replace the cap when finished

With zero electrical power
With a dead battery, the mechanical override still functions. Remove the cap, press the override button/slot down with a tool, and shift to Neutral without needing brake pedal input. The steering wheel will remain locked, so flatbed towing or towing with front wheels raised is required.
