🚨 2026 Dodge Hornet: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 Hornet is expected to use a monostable (spring-return) console shifter that returns to center after each selection; shift position is shown on the instrument cluster.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is set (or wheels are chocked).
  2. Attempt to turn the ignition to ON (press start button twice without brake, or insert key fob if prompts appear on cluster).
  3. Firmly press and hold the brake pedal.
  4. Look for the shift-lock override: on the console to the lower-right or rear-right of the shifter base, there should be a small rectangular cap or slot (often black and flush with the console trim).
  5. Pry off the cap with a flathead screwdriver or similar tool.
  6. Insert the tool into the override slot and press down or pull up (depending on the mechanism—test gently) while moving the shifter rearward (toward R) to select Neutral.
  7. The cluster or shifter area should indicate Neutral if successful; if the cluster is dead, proceed carefully and verify the vehicle rolls freely when released.
  8. For plug-in hybrid models: disconnect the charge cable if plugged in, and do NOT attempt to tow with rear wheels on the ground. Use a flatbed or tow dolly with rear wheels raised.
Shift-lock override location
Small cap/slot on the console near the lower-right or rear of the shifter base; exact position may vary slightly by trim (check owner's manual for any 2026-specific updates).
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the monostable shifter is entirely electronic and will not release into Neutral using the override alone. You must supply 12V power via a jump pack or jumper cables to another vehicle. Connect positive to the underhood positive post (driver side, near fuse box) and negative to a chassis ground, then attempt the override procedure. If unable to jump-start, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with all wheels off the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The Hornet plug-in hybrid has an electric rear axle. NEVER tow with the rear wheels on the ground for any distance, even in Neutral, as this will spin the rear motor and damage the electrical drive system. Always use a flatbed or tow with the rear wheels raised. Ensure the vehicle is in a 'service/transport mode' if available via the cluster menus when power is restored, or consult the manual for tow mode activation.
