🚨 1992 Dodge Monaco: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 Dodge Monaco uses a column-mounted automatic shifter with a mechanical shift lock that engages when the ignition is off or the brake pedal is not depressed.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (this may provide enough power to release the shift lock even with a weak battery)
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the steering column shroud near the base of the shifter lever—look for a small rectangular opening or removable cap on the right side of the column near where the shifter pivots
  4. Remove any cover cap by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and push firmly downward or toward the steering wheel while simultaneously pulling the shift lever toward you to move it to Neutral
  6. If no electrical power is available and the override does not work, the column shroud can be removed (two screws underneath) to access the shift lock solenoid and cable mechanism directly—manually push the lock pawl away from the shifter gate to release it

With zero electrical power
With zero power, the shift lock override slot should still function mechanically. If it does not, remove the lower steering column cover to access the shift lock mechanism directly and manually disengage the locking pawl from the shifter gate.
