🚨 2007-2009 Dodge Ram 2500: Emergency Neutral
The 2007-2009 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel uses a column-mounted automatic shifter with an electronic shift interlock system controlled by the brake light switch and ignition position.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (this may provide enough power to release the shift lock even with a weak battery)
- Locate the shift lock override: on the right side of the steering column near the base of the shift lever, look for a small rectangular plastic cap or slot
- Remove the plastic cover cap by prying carefully with a small flat-blade screwdriver
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and push firmly inward toward the column while simultaneously pulling the shift lever toward you into Neutral
- If the override does not work with zero electrical power, you may need to remove the lower steering column cover (two or three Phillips screws underneath) to access the shift lock solenoid directly—manually push or pry the shift lock pawl away from the shift gate mechanism to release the lever
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular plastic cap on the right side of the steering column near the base of the shift lever, approximately 1-2 inches below where the lever pivots
With zero electrical power
With zero power, the mechanical shift lock override should work. If it does not release, remove the lower column cover and manually disengage the shift lock actuator/pawl from the shifter gate. The mechanism should be visible once the cover is removed.
