The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening on the right side of the steering column shroud, just below and behind the shift lever at roughly 4 o'clock position relative to the lever
- Remove the rubber cap or plastic cover from the override slot if present
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot and push firmly inward
- While maintaining pressure on the override release, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shift lever toward neutral
- If no electrical power exists, the override may require more force; keep tool inserted and apply steady pressure while moving the shifter

With completely dead battery, the shift interlock solenoid defaults to locked position. The mechanical override must be used.
