🚨 1996 Dodge Ram 3500: Emergency Neutral
The 1996 Ram 3500 uses a column-mounted PRNDL shifter with electronic shift interlock that prevents shifting out of Park without brake pedal application.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override access: look for a small rectangular slot on the steering column shroud, typically on the right side near the base of the shift lever
- Remove any rubber cap or plastic cover from the override slot
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, ignition key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot and push firmly inward
- While maintaining pressure on the override, press the shifter button on the shift lever and move it toward neutral
- If no electrical power exists, keep firm pressure on the override tool while manipulating the shifter; the mechanical override disengages the solenoid pawl
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular slot on the steering column shroud near the base of the shift lever, typically on the right side of the column; may be covered by a rubber cap or trim piece.
With zero electrical power
With dead battery, the shift interlock solenoid remains in locked position by default. The mechanical override physically pushes the locking pawl out of engagement with the shifter gate. Insert tool into override slot and maintain firm steady pressure while moving the shifter. If steering is locked, rock the steering wheel while turning the key to ACC to release steering lock first.
