⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (this may provide enough power to release the shift lock even with a weak battery)
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the column shroud near the shifter mechanism - it is typically a small rectangular opening covered by a removable cap on the right side of the column near where the shifter lever emerges
- Remove the cap or cover if present
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and moving it down into Neutral
- If the shifter still won't move, proceed to the no-power procedure below
Shift-lock override location
On the steering column shroud near the shifter base, typically on the right side - look for a small rectangular slot or removable cap
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock may still be mechanically engaged. Try the override slot procedure first. If this fails, you may need to access the shifter linkage under the vehicle: locate the transmission shifter lever on the driver's side of the transmission, disconnect the shift cable or linkage at the transmission end, and manually move the transmission lever into Neutral (typically 2 clicks back from Park). This requires getting under the truck safely.
