The 2006 Ram 3500 uses a column-mounted automatic shifter with an electronic shift interlock system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position if possible (even a weak battery may provide enough power)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock override - on 2006 models it is typically a small slot or cap on the right side of the column shroud near the shifter base
- Remove any cover cap if present
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or key into the override slot and push down while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the lever to Neutral
- If unsuccessful, see no-power notes below
Shift-lock override location
Right side of the steering column shroud, near the base of the shifter lever - look for a small covered slot approximately 1-2 inches below where the lever emerges from the column
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, turn the key to ACC (mechanical unlock of steering). The shift lock override slot should still function mechanically - use firm pressure on the tool while manipulating the shifter. If the override is completely electrical and non-functional, you must access the transmission shifter linkage: from under the vehicle on the driver's side of the transmission, locate the shift lever, disconnect the cable, and manually shift the transmission to Neutral (2 notches from Park).
