⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake and chock the wheels securely
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position if battery power is available
- Press and hold the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the steering column - look on the right side of the column shroud near where the shifter lever emerges, typically covered by a small removable cap
- Remove the cap by prying carefully with a trim tool or small flat screwdriver
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or ignition key into the override slot
- Push down or press inward on the tool while simultaneously pressing the shifter release button and moving the shifter lever down into Neutral
- Once in Neutral, remove the tool
Shift-lock override location
Right side of the steering column shroud, approximately 1-2 inches below the shifter lever base, usually behind a small rectangular cap that may be color-matched to the column
With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, turn the ignition key to ACC to unlock the steering wheel mechanically. The shift lock override slot should function mechanically even without power - insert the tool and apply firm pressure while manipulating the shifter. If the mechanical override does not release the shifter, you will need to access the transmission directly: crawl under the vehicle, locate the shift cable attachment on the driver's side of the transmission case, disconnect the cable from the transmission lever, and manually move the transmission lever to Neutral (typically 2 clicks rearward from Park). Ensure the vehicle is properly supported and stable.
