🚨 2009 Dodge Ram 3500: Emergency Neutral
The 2009 Ram 3500 uses a traditional column-mounted PRNDL shifter with a mechanical shift interlock that prevents movement out of Park without brake pedal pressure.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge (this may provide enough power to release the interlock)
- Locate the shift interlock override slot: on the steering column shroud, look for a small plastic cap or access hole near the base of the shifter lever on the right side of the column
- Remove the cap if present (it may pull straight out or require gentle prying with a flat screwdriver)
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, trim tool, or similar rigid object into the override slot approximately 1/2 inch
- While pressing the override tool firmly into the slot, press the brake pedal (even with dead battery, the mechanical override should work) and move the shifter out of Park
- If no power at all: the override release should work mechanically without power, but you must maintain pressure on the override tool while shifting
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or winched onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
The shift interlock override is mechanical and should function without electrical power. Insert tool into override slot, apply firm pressure, and shift to Neutral. The brake pedal does not need to function electrically for the override to work.
