🚨 2010 Dodge Ram 3500: Emergency Neutral

The 2010 Ram 3500 (now badged as Ram brand, not Dodge Ram) uses a traditional column-mounted PRNDL shifter with a mechanical shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge
  3. Locate the shift interlock override: on the right side of the steering column shroud near the base of the shifter lever, look for a small rectangular or round cap
  4. Remove the cap by pulling it straight out or gently prying with a trim tool
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot approximately 1/2 inch deep
  6. While holding the override tool pressed firmly into the slot, press the brake pedal and move the shifter from Park to Neutral
  7. If no electrical power: the mechanical override should still function—maintain pressure on the override tool while shifting
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved onto a flatbed or towed with rear wheels off the ground (4WD models require flatbed or dollies)

With zero electrical power
The shift interlock override is mechanical. With zero power, insert the override tool into the slot, press firmly, and shift to Neutral. Brake pedal electrical function is not required for the override mechanism.
