The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
- For column shifter: locate the small shift lock override slot - it's a small rectangular opening on the left side of the shifter housing near the base of the shift lever.
- For rotary dial shifter: the override access is typically under a small cap or cover near the base of the dial assembly on the center console.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the metal end of the key into the override slot.
- While pressing down firmly on the override release, move the shifter to Neutral (column) or rotate the dial to Neutral (rotary).
- Keep pressure on the override until the shifter is fully in Neutral position.
- The instrument cluster should show 'N' even without power if the mechanical detent engaged properly.
