The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
- For column shifter: locate the small shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter housing near the base of the shift lever.
- For rotary dial shifter: look for a small removable cap or cover near the base of the rotary dial assembly on the center console.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key end into the override slot.
- While pressing down firmly on the override release, move the shifter to Neutral (column) or rotate the dial to Neutral (rotary).
- Maintain pressure on the override until the shifter fully engages Neutral.
