The 1990 Dodge Ram W350 has a column-mounted automatic transmission shifter (typically A727 or A518 Torqueflite) with a mechanical shift lock that may or may not have an electronic interlock depending on build date.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge.
  3. Most 1990 models use a simple mechanical column lock without electronic brake interlock—try pressing the brake pedal and shifting to Neutral normally.
  4. If the shifter is locked and an electronic interlock is present, look for a small shift lock override slot on the lower steering column shroud, usually on the left side near the shifter base.
  5. If found, remove any cover cap and insert a screwdriver or key into the slot, press down, and attempt to shift to Neutral.
