🚨 1992 Dodge Ram W350: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 Dodge Ram W350 has a column-mounted automatic transmission shifter with a brake-transmission shift interlock (BTSI) that prevents shifting out of Park without brake pedal application.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if any battery power remains.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the lower steering column shroud, typically on the left side near the shifter base.
  4. Remove the plastic cover cap from the override slot by prying gently with a small flathead screwdriver.
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal and shift the column lever to Neutral.
  7. If there is no electrical power and the mechanical override does not free the shifter, you will need to manually release the transmission from underneath (see noPowerNotes).
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved onto a flatbed or towed with rear wheels off the ground (4WD models should be flatbedded).
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular slot with plastic cover located on the lower left side of the steering column shroud, near the base of the shifter mechanism.
With zero electrical power
The shift lock override should function mechanically without power. If the column remains locked, access the transmission shift lever under the vehicle on the driver's side of the transmission case. Disconnect the shift cable or linkage rod from the transmission lever. Manually move the transmission lever to the Neutral position (second detent from the rearmost position). Use proper jack stands and wheel chocks before working underneath.
