The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked
- Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the ACC or ON position (this may require a jump box or jumper cables if the battery is completely dead)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- If the shifter will not move with the brake pedal depressed, locate the shift lock override slot on the steering column shroud near the base of the shifter
- Remove the small plastic cover or access cap near the shifter lever base on the column
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or the key itself into the override slot
