🚨 2003 Dodge Sprinter: Emergency Neutral

The 2003 Dodge Sprinter was available primarily with a 6-speed manual transmission in North America, with a floor-mounted shifter that does not have a shift interlock system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Press the clutch pedal fully to the floor (manual transmission)
  3. Move the shifter from the current gear position to Neutral (center position)
  4. Release the clutch pedal
  5. The vehicle can now roll freely and can be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed
  6. If the vehicle has the optional 5-speed automatic transmission, follow the automatic procedure: turn the key to ON position, press the brake pedal, and shift to Neutral using the floor-mounted shifter
Shift-lock override location
Not applicable for manual transmission; for automatic-equipped models, there is a shift lock override button or slot on the left side of the shifter gate near the base
With zero electrical power
With a manual transmission, no electrical power is required to place the vehicle in Neutral—simply press the clutch and move the shifter. For automatic transmission models with no power, locate the shift lock override (small button or slot on the shifter console) and press it while moving the shifter to Neutral. The override works mechanically.
