⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is on level ground.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining.
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular slot with a removable cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side of the shifter lever.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to remove the cap covering the override slot.
- Insert the screwdriver or key firmly into the slot and press down while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter out of Park.
- If successful, shift to Neutral and verify the shifter remains in Neutral before releasing the override.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the override slot still functions mechanically. Insert tool into the override slot and press down firmly—you may need more force without electrical assist. The shifter should release from Park. You will NOT have power steering or power brakes, so vehicle must be pushed or winched onto flatbed.
