🚨 1992 Dodge W250: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 W250 uses a column-mounted shift lever with a mechanical cable linkage to the transmission and a key-interlock that requires the key in ACC or ON position to shift from Park.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the ACC or ON position (even with a dead battery, the mechanical key cylinder should turn)
  2. Press the brake pedal firmly
  3. Press the button on the side of the shift lever and pull the lever down toward you and then up into Neutral
  4. If the brake-shift interlock prevents movement even with the key turned, locate the small plastic cover/access hole on the lower steering column shroud near the shift lever base
  5. Use a small screwdriver or trim tool to press the manual shift lock override tab through the access hole while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving to Neutral

With zero electrical power
The column shifter is mechanically linked to the transmission. With zero power, turn the key to ACC mechanically, then use the shift lock override access hole on the column shroud to manually release the interlock while shifting. The mechanical key cylinder should turn regardless of battery state.
