The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly applied.
- Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available.
- Locate the shift lock override slot, typically a small covered opening near the base of the shifter console.
- Remove the small plastic cap or cover using a flathead screwdriver or similar tool.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If you have no electrical power, keep the override pressed while physically moving the shifter to Neutral without the brake pedal.
