The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake
- Turn the ignition to ON/ACC position if 12V power is available (do not start engine)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock override: look for a small cover cap near the base of the shifter assembly, typically on the left side or front-left of the shifter
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal emergency key blade to carefully pry off the override cover
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the exposed override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override mechanism down, move the shifter lever to the Neutral position
- The instrument cluster should display N if successful
- Release the override, remove the tool, and the vehicle can now be moved
