⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V power is available (hybrid system does NOT need to be ready)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small circular or rectangular cap/cover near the base of the shifter console
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while moving the shifter to N (neutral)
- If the electronic shifter will not engage neutral even with override, you may need to access the transmission manually underneath the vehicle or use a scan tool to command neutral

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the monostable shifter will not function even with mechanical override. You must either jump-start the 12V system to get minimal power for shifter operation, or use the transmission manual release lever underneath the vehicle (requires lifting vehicle and accessing transmission - recommend professional service). The high-voltage hybrid battery does not power the shifter electronics.

PLUG-IN HYBRID: Before towing, disconnect the 12V battery to prevent hybrid system wake-up. The E-Tense 4x4 models have electric rear axle - ALL WHEELS MUST BE OFF THE GROUND for towing. Flatbed transport is mandatory. Do not tow with any wheels on the ground as this will damage the electric drive units.
