🚨 1990 Ferrari 348: Emergency Neutral

The 1990 Ferrari 348 with automatic transmission uses a traditional console-mounted gear lever with a mechanical shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Locate the shift lock override slot - look for a small covered access hole near the base of the shifter on the console
  3. Remove the cover cap (may require a trim tool or flat-blade screwdriver)
  4. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or the key into the override slot
  5. While pressing down or holding the override release, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
  6. The shifter should move freely with the override engaged, even without electrical power or brake pedal pressure
Shift-lock override location
Near the shifter base on the center console; look for a small covered slot or access hole adjacent to the shifter mechanism (exact location varies, but typically on the right side or front of the shifter housing)
With zero electrical power
The shift lock override on the 348 automatic is mechanical. With zero 12V power, you can still use the override slot to mechanically release the shift lock and move the shifter to neutral without any electrical power. The override bypasses both the brake interlock and any electrical solenoid.
