🚨 1992 Ferrari 348: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 Ferrari 348 with automatic transmission uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and chock all wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the console - look for a small covered slot or cap near the shifter base on the right side
  4. Remove the cover cap (may require prying with a small flathead screwdriver)
  5. Insert a small screwdriver or the key blade into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to neutral
  7. If no power available, continue holding the override and attempt to move the shifter to neutral with firm pressure
  8. Have an assistant help guide the vehicle while you maintain the shifter in neutral
Shift-lock override location
Near the shifter base on the console, typically on the right side under a small cover cap - exact location may vary; consult owner's manual if accessible
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override must be used. The mechanical override will release the shift lock mechanism without electrical power. You may need to rock the vehicle slightly while manipulating the override to relieve pressure on the parking pawl.
