⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available
- Locate the shift-lock override slot, typically a small covered access point near the base of the shifter console
- Remove the small plastic cap or cover over the override slot using a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool
- Insert a rigid tool (key, small screwdriver, or similar) into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no power is available, continue holding the override down and manually move the shifter through the gate to Neutral position
- Once in Neutral, release the override tool and verify the shifter is secure in the Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the console shifter assembly, typically on the driver's side or front face of the shifter surround; look for a small cap or access slot approximately 0.5 inches in diameter
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift-lock override will still function mechanically. The override bypasses the electrical interlock, allowing manual movement of the shifter cable. You may need to apply significant force to move the shifter through the gate without power assist. Ensure the ignition key is in the ON position if possible to unlock the steering column.
