🚨 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia: Emergency Neutral

The 2011 458 Italia uses an F1-style dual-clutch transmission with electronic push-button shifter controls on the steering wheel and center console, with no traditional mechanical shifter linkage.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Attempt to power up the vehicle by pressing the engine start button without pressing the brake pedal to enter accessory mode
  2. If accessory power is available, press the 'N' button on the center console to engage Neutral electronically
  3. If there is absolutely no electrical power, the transmission CANNOT be placed in neutral electronically - the dual-clutch system requires power to disengage
  4. With no power, contact Ferrari roadside assistance or a specialist flatbed service - the vehicle MUST be flatbedded with all four wheels off the ground
  5. Do NOT attempt to tow this vehicle with any wheels on the ground without power - severe transmission damage will occur
  6. If the 12V battery is dead but can be jump-started or charged minimally, provide power and use the console N button to electronically engage Neutral
  7. Once in Neutral with power, verify transmission is in N mode on the digital display before moving the vehicle
With zero electrical power
The 458 Italia has NO mechanical shift-lock override or manual neutral release. The dual-clutch transmission (DCT) is fully electronic and requires 12V power to operate clutch actuators and engage neutral. With zero power, the transmission remains locked in its last position. You must either restore minimal battery power (jump-start or trickle charge) to use the electronic N button, or flatbed the car with all four wheels off the ground. Do not attempt to dolly-tow or drag with wheels on pavement.
