🚨 2014 Ferrari 458 Speciale: Emergency Neutral

The 458 Speciale uses a Formula 1-style automatic transmission with a central console-mounted shift gate featuring a traditional H-pattern gate with automatic sequential shifting.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is engaged
  2. Turn the ignition key to the MAR (ON) position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift-lock override slot on the center console shift gate assembly, typically covered by a small rubber cap or trim piece near the base of the shifter
  4. Remove the cover cap using a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool
  5. Insert the ignition key or a small flathead screwdriver into the override slot
  6. Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously moving the shift lever to N (Neutral) position
  7. If successful, the transmission will be in neutral and vehicle can roll freely
  8. For flatbed loading with completely dead electrical system, proceed to manual release procedure below

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the F1-style dual-clutch transmission typically defaults to a locked position. Access the transmission manual release mechanism from underneath the vehicle—this requires a lift or raising the car safely. Consult the owner's manual for the specific DCT manual release procedure, as this involves mechanical manipulation of the transmission shift drum. For most situations with a dead battery, flatbed transport is strongly recommended rather than attempting to roll the vehicle.
