The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is engaged
- Turn the ignition key to the MAR (ON) position if battery has any remaining charge
- Locate the shift-lock override access point on the center console near the shift gate base
- Remove the small plastic cover or cap concealing the override slot (typically on the right side of the shift gate)
- Insert the ignition key or a small flathead screwdriver into the override slot
- Press down or push in on the override release while moving the shift lever to the N (Neutral) position
- The transmission should unlock and allow selection of neutral
- If vehicle still will not shift with minimal power, use flatbed transport

With completely dead electrical system, the 488's F1 DCT transmission will be locked electronically. The transmission has a mechanical neutral release mechanism accessible from underneath the vehicle, but this requires raising the car and accessing the transmission directly. This procedure involves locating the shift drum manual release lever on the transmission case and rotating it to neutral position. Due to the low ground clearance and complexity, flatbed transport is the recommended method for a completely dead 488. Do not attempt to tow with wheels on the ground.
