⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake fully
- Turn the ignition to MAR (ON) position if battery has any charge; if completely dead, you will need to provide external 12V power to the system
- If ignition is on: Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the small circular override slot on the left side of the shifter base, just forward of the lever pivot point
- Remove the small rubber cap covering the override slot using a fingernail or trim tool
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade into the override slot
- While holding the screwdriver/key inserted fully, move the shifter rearward through the gate to Neutral position (first detent back from default position)
- The transmission will mechanically disengage and the vehicle can now roll
- If moving onto a flatbed, ensure all four wheels are on the deck; do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock cannot be released electronically. You must provide external 12V power to the battery (jump pack or jumper cables to the battery in the front trunk) to energize the shift-lock system enough to use the manual override. Without any power, the transmission remains locked in Park and the vehicle cannot be shifted.
