⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition key to the ON/ACC position if battery has any charge remaining
- Firmly depress the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override slot, typically a small covered opening near the base of the shifter console on the left or right side
- Remove the cover cap by prying gently with a flat tool
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the key into the override slot
- While pressing down on the override, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- If the vehicle must be moved with zero electrical power, the override mechanism should still function mechanically, though you may need to apply more force
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the shifter console, typically on the left side; accessed by removing a small cover cap
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the mechanical shift lock override should still function. You may need to turn the key to ACC position mechanically (does not require electrical power) and use more force on the override mechanism. The steering wheel will be locked, so the vehicle must be towed on a flatbed.
