The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if possible (if battery has any charge)
- Locate the shift lock override slot—look for a small rectangular cap or slot near the base of the shifter assembly, typically on the left side or front of the shifter base
- Remove the cap by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to N
- If no brake function, keep override pressed and manually shift to N position
