⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available
- Locate the shift lock override slot - look for a small covered slot or cap near the base of the shifter on the console
- Remove the cap or cover using a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power is available) and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If no power is available, press down on the override while pulling the shifter rearward to Neutral without pressing the brake
- Keep the override pressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the shifter console, typically on the right side or front face of the shifter surround; exact location may vary by market and trim
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you cannot use the ignition. The mechanical shift lock override should still function - simply insert the tool into the override slot and apply firm pressure while moving the shifter to Neutral. The override bypasses the electronic interlock mechanically.
