🚨 2017 Fiat Punto: Emergency Neutral

The 2017 Fiat Punto with automatic transmission uses a traditional P-R-N-D console-mounted shifter with an electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - look for a small covered slot or cap near the base of the shifter on the console
  4. Remove the cap or cover using a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot
  6. Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power is available) and moving the shifter to Neutral
  7. If no power is available, press down on the override while pulling the shifter rearward to Neutral without pressing the brake
  8. Keep the override pressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the shifter console, typically on the right side or front face of the shifter surround; exact location may vary by market and trim
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you cannot use the ignition. The mechanical shift lock override should still function - simply insert the tool into the override slot and apply firm pressure while moving the shifter to Neutral. The override bypasses the electronic interlock mechanically.
