⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available
- Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small rectangular or circular cap on the console near the shifter base
- Carefully pry off the override cap using a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, mechanical key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power is available)
- While maintaining pressure on the override, press the shifter button (if equipped) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no electrical power is available, maintain firm pressure on the override while moving the shifter to Neutral - the mechanical override bypasses the electronic interlock
Shift-lock override location
The override slot is located on the center console near the shifter base, typically forward or to the right side of the shifter, under a small removable trim cap
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter controls will not function but the mechanical shift lock override will still operate. Insert the tool into the override slot, apply firm continuous pressure, and move the shifter to Neutral. The override mechanically releases the shift lock pawl. Note that without power, the ignition lock may prevent key removal even in Neutral.
