🚨 1994 Ford Bronco: Emergency Neutral

The 1994 Ford Bronco uses a column-mounted automatic transmission shifter with a mechanical shift lock system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure parking brake is set and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn ignition to ON/RUN position (not START) if battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the steering column shroud near the shifter lever - it is a small rectangular opening typically covered by a rubber plug or cap
  4. The override slot is usually located on the right side of the column shroud, just below or adjacent to the shifter lever
  5. Remove the rubber cap if present
  6. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the slot and push in firmly
  7. While holding the override depressed, press the brake pedal and move the column shifter down through the gate to Neutral
  8. If Neutral cannot be engaged, keep override depressed and try moving shifter to Drive position, then back to Neutral

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock is purely mechanical on this generation. The override slot will still function without any electrical power. Simply locate the slot, insert screwdriver, depress the override mechanism, and shift to Neutral. No battery power is required for the mechanical release.
